How to Design a Wordmark with Google Fonts

A wordmark is a logo made entirely from the letters of a brand name. Because the font does all the work, small choices in typeface, weight and letter spacing decide whether it looks professional. Wordmark Studio lets you test those choices live.

  1. Type your brand name. See it instantly in any Google Font, or upload your own font file.
  2. Pick a typeface that fits the brand. Compare a few options. Geometric sans fonts feel modern, serifs feel established, and rounded fonts feel friendly.
  3. Adjust kerning and spacing. Select a letter pair and tune the gap between the letters. Uneven gaps are the most common reason amateur wordmarks look off.
  4. Check contrast and legibility. Make sure the wordmark still reads at small sizes and on both light and dark backgrounds.
  5. Export. Download SVG, PNG or CSS, or share a link with a client for feedback.

Before You Use the Font in a Logo

Most Google Fonts use the SIL Open Font License, which allows commercial use, including in logos. Check each font's license first with the font license checker. Not sure which fonts suit your brand? Read how to choose fonts for your brand, browse font pairings or see fonts for branding.

Live Font Editor & Wordmark Design Studio

The Wordmark Studio is a professional live typography workspace for designing logotypes, wordmarks and brand identities. Choose any Google Font, customize weight, spacing, size and color, then preview your wordmark across real-world brand mockups including business cards, smartphones and signage.

Unlike static font browsers, the Wordmark Studio renders your exact text in real design contexts so you can see how a font performs as a logo — not just as a paragraph. Test how your brand name looks in Playfair Display vs Montserrat vs Inter before committing to a direction.

Professional Typography Controls
